I've been seeing sites explaining how to soak wood in dyed apple juice and baking before stringing together for a rat chew toy. What kind of wood does one buy that is safe?

So far they all look black. Their mom is a beige color. Are they going to change color or is this it? Their fur just started coming in. They're too cute! Eyes are still closed.
